We present findings from a qualitative, longitudinal study with 18 US-primarily based members who use basic-function LLMs for socioemotional ***st and participated in one or more of our research phases, including initial interviews, a four-week diary examine, focus groups, and exit interviews.
Participants turned to LLMs because different forms of ***st have been unavailable, unaffordable, socially costly, or inadequate. As they continued to use these techniques, design options comparable to anthropomorphic cues, default validation, persistent responsiveness, and weak disengagement mechanisms shaped their ongoing reliance.

Participants described meaningful ***st alongside dependency, epistemic distortion through one-sided validation, privateness expectations without corresponding authorized safety, and continued use despite awareness of those dangers. We argue these dynamics replicate a structurally unfair tradeoff: customers settle for risks because help is otherwise absent, whereas available programs are optimized to deepen engagement and lack care-based mostly accountability.
